Founded in 1955
Lumbermen’s was founded in 1955 by three brothers, Paul, John and Henry Bouma, in a post-war era when our nation was experiencing a severe shortage of building materials. The Bouma brothers, who were operating an interior contracting company at the time, were encouraged by their suppliers to establish a building material distribution business in order to provide much needed materials to the housing construction boom. Following this encouragement, the three brothers founded Lumbermen’s Pick-up as a building material enterprise serving West Michigan lumber dealers (Lumbermen) who would pick up their materials from the newly established distributor. A few years later, the “Pick-up” portion of the name was dropped when Lumbermen’s began operating a delivery fleet that has now grown to more than 50 tractor-trailers and other delivery equipment serving a four state mid-west region.
Diverse Products, Services and Industries
Adding to our building material offering, in the late seventies Lumbermen’s began distributing laminate which quickly led us to other products such as cabinets and hardware making us a full-line distributor to the kitchen and bath industry. Over time, Lumbermen’s expanded into countertop fabrication and installation where today we market and install countertops for single family, multi-family and commercial projects ranging from laminate to solid surface and to stone products such as quartz and granite. Today we have over thirty install teams operating in our four-state market.
Lumbermen’s also services the office furniture and other case good industries with laminate and board products both as a distributor and as a manufacturer of wood and laminate components. We bring in over six hundred rail cars of board products each year that are distributed to our customers or used by us to manufacture components that are sold to our industrial and commercial customers as a way to add capacity to their businesses.
As further diversification to our business, Lumbermen’s manufactures entry doors using components from partners such as Therma-Tru and Simpson Wood Doors. We offer factory paint and stain finishes to our doors as an additional value-added option. We also distribute a line of interior doors to round out our door offering,
